IELTS test is one the most authorized language assessment tests to assess your language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. This test announces results in the form of bands ranging from 0 to 9.0. Proper guidelines from any expert teacher are mandatory to prepare for IELTS test. For higher studies in Europe or any English-speaking country, IELTS is considered the passport to cross borders and grab unlimited opportunities. You are supposed to do IELTS Academic for higher studies, but for PR (permanent residence) or work visa, IELTS General is sufficient.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is designed for going to work, job or study in other countries where English is native language. For this purpose, you need to understand the English language to communicate with others. This test is taken under British council, IDP; IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, and was established in 1989.

Why take IELTS?

IELTS test is taken by those people who want to go abroad for good jobs or higher studies. Through this test, your ability of English fluency, grammar and sentence structures are checked properly. English is the 3rd most famous language spoken by the 15 % population of the whole world.

After taking this test, you can go to Canada, the USA (United States of America), Australia, Ireland and the UK (United Kingdom). Furthermore, approximately all European countries demand IELTS to proceed for visa process. Even China asks for IELTS, as English is the international language and has got the status of passport to enter in any country.

How was IELTS created?

IELTS is the acronym or abbreviation of International English Language Testing System. It was developed first time in 1980 and administrated to the learners in 1989. The IELTS creators and builders were the British Council, IDP, IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English Organization.

When you achieve higher bands in IELTS, it will be easy for you to understand and communicate with English native speakers.  More or less, all migration bodies, universities and famous work places and educational institutions require higher IELTS score (6.5 bands or more). Your higher score will decide to find your good job or study.

For PR (Permanent Residence) or work visa, 4 to 5 bands are needed to fly abroad. Talking about Life skills A1 test which is also known as spouse visa does not involve any bands. It just requires passing the life skills test.

How IELTS is developed

IELTS test is developed to manage an accurate, fair mastery of English language assessment. IELTS test covers four sections (Reading, Writing, Speaking and listening). The questions of these four skills are developed from English language specialist countries like (Ireland, New Zealand, UK, Australia, USA etc.).

The British Council, IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English are the main stakeholders of preparing and conducting IELTS at international level, maintaining the quality and standard.

How does IELTS work?

There are two types of IELTS module: Academic & General. In both types of test, there are total four sections (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing). Speaking and Listening are the same for both candidates (General& Academic), while Reading and Writing are different for both candidates.

Types of IELTS

Following are the two main types of IELTS which are being discussed below

Academic IELTS

For going abroad for higher studies, you need to get required bands in Academic IELTS varying from 6.0 bands to 8.0 bands depending on the level of college or university. There are four modules: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

As far as listening section is concerned, it has 40 questions to be attempted in 30 minutes. 10 minutes are given to you to transfer your answer to the answer sheet provided by the examiners in the examination hall. The most important thing is that level of difficulty increases as you proceed.

Speaking section has three sub- portions namely, introductory questions, cue card and follow up questions, all assessing your ability to respond according the demands of the questions, your natural and comfortable way of speaking, appropriate vocabulary and grammar, pronunciation, stress at word level and sentence level.

Your easiness with the English language matters a lot in the speaking module of IELTS.

As far division of bands is concerned, sections 1, 2, and 3 carry 1, 6 and 2 bands respectively. It means that cue card section has the maximum weightage, so give it a lot of time while doing practice.

Moving ahead, reading section has 3 parts and the number of questions is 40, including various types of questions like fill in the blanks, multiple choice questions, list of headings, etc. Time to attempt all the questions is 60 minute; and keeps in mind that no extra time is given to transfer the answers to the answer sheet.

Mastery in time management leads to achieve higher bands in IELTS reading section.  Moreover, as you finish section 1 in reading section, transfer the answers to the answer sheet, and do not wait for the completion of the whole reading section. This practical tip can save you from the embarrassment of shortage of time.

Last but not least is writing section which is the crux of the whole IELTS demanding the beauty of expression in the best possible way. Focus is on the fulfillment of task response, cohesion and coherence, grammar and vocabulary.

Writing has two sections: in the first section, you are to describe the diagram, chart, process or table while the second section demands creativity on different topics including opinion essay, problem-solution essay, and discussion essay and so on.

There are 60 minutes to do this task; experts of IELTS suggest spending 20 minutes on task 1 and 40 minutes on task 2. According to my personal experience, you should spend 20 minutes on task 1, 30 minutes on task 2 and 10 minutes to revise these tasks.

Lastly, task 1 is of 3 bands while task 2 contains 6 bands, so manage time properly and achieve your goal of targeted bands in IELTS.

General IELTS

In General IELTS, speaking and listening are same; reading has the same format, but the level of difficulty is lower as compared to IELTS Academic test. As far as writing is concerned, letter is written in task 1 while task 2 is same in both types of IELTS.
